This 2-day hands-on training course explores the new features and major changes in VMware Infrastructure 3, which consists of VMware ESX Server and VMware VirtualCenter.

Prerequisites

  • Hands-on experience with configuring and administering ESX Server and VirtualCenter
  • Completion of "Virtual Infrastructure with ESX Server 2 and VirtualCenter 1" training is highly recommended

Course outline

Module 1: Upgrade Procedures
  • Upgrade VirtualCenter 1.x components to version 2.0
  • Upgrade ESX Server 2.5.x software and VMFS 2 file systems to ESX Server 3.0 and VMFS 3
  • Upgrade VMs' virtual hardware and VMware tools from version 2 to version 3

Module 2: Networking

  • Create virtual switches
  • Define connection types and port policies

Module 3: Storage

  • Add Fibre Channel SAN storage
  • Create a VMFS datastore
  • Create an NFS datastore
  • Identify iSCSI storage components

Module 4: Virtual Machine Creation and Management

  • Deploy VMs from templates
  • Manage VMs using Web Access
  • Migrate VMs using VMotion

Module 5: Resource Pools

  • Use resource pools on a standalone host
  • Create a DRS cluster
  • Use resource pools in a DRS cluster

Module 6: Data Protection

  • VM backup strategies, such as VCB
  • High availability strategies: HA clusters
