Description:

Build your skills to design Workload Manager (WLM) configurations to effectively manage system resource consumption for mission critical applications. WLM is an addition to the Base Operating System (BOS) for controlling the allocation of system resources based on a performance policy. Develop an excellent base in performance skills and performance management of system resources relating to Central Processing Unit (CPU), memory and disk Input/Output (I/O).

IACET Continuing Education Units: 2.4

Audience:

This is an advanced course for System administrators, programmers, Database administrators (DBA), IBM Business Partners, and system analysts who manage the performance for AIX systems. Additionally, individuals involved in server consolidation projects benefit from this course.

Objectives:

  • Describe the need for workload management
  • Define WLM terms and concepts
  • Describe in detail the overall functionality of WLM
  • Build WLM superclasses and subclasses and assign processes to the classes for CPU, memory and disk I/O control
  • Assign classes to tier levels for hierarchical control of resource allocation
  • Build class assignment rules for CPU, memory and disk I/O control
  • Decide what resource shares are required and assign resource shares
  • Apply resource limits to classes
  • Analyze WLM managed resources
  • Demonstrate the use of WLM performance monitoring tools
  • Evaluate WLM practical experiences
  • Manipulate WLM using manual assignments
  • Examine the WLM Application Programming Interface (API)

Prerequisites:

You should complete:

  • AIX System Administration I: Implementation (AU140) or (Q1314)
  • AIX System Administration II: Problem Determination (AU160) or (Q1316)
  • AIX 5L System Administration III: Performance Management (AU180) or (Q1318)
  • AIX 5L System Administration IV: Storage Management (AU200) or (Q1320) (preferred, but not required)

or have equivalent hands-on experience

You should also have at least one year of UNIX system administration experience, preferably with AIX 5L V5.3.

Topics:

  • Introduction to workload management
  • WLM functionality
  • WLM classes, rules, and shares
  • WLM limits
  • Additional features
  • WLM graphical performance monitoring tools
  • Practical experience
  • WLM manual assignments
  • WLM API
  • Using API applications
