Course Materials
This course is for support individuals who want to understand how to do basic NIM implementation. Learn basic Network Installation Management (NIM) concepts and how to perform basic NIM tasks such as setting up the master, performing a base Operating System (O/S) and mksysb install, defining common resources, basic lpp_source and SPOT management, and how to handle ongoing client updates.
Lecture materials are reinforced by performing hands-on exercises using AIX machines.

- Introduction to NIM
- Setting up the NIM master
- Base O/S install
- Defining additional base install resources
- Advanced base install
- Using NIM for disaster recovery
- LPP_SOURCE and SPOT management
- Ongoing client updates

Audience:
This is an intermediate course for network administrators, system administrators, or other individuals who install and maintain AIX code.
Objectives:
- Understand basic NIM concepts and terminology
- Setup a NIM master
- Perform a base AIX O/S install
- Define and utilize common NIM resources such as bosinst_data, installp_bundle, resolv_conf and scripts
- Understand basic NIM network issues
- Perform a NIM client mksysb backup and restore
- Perform a manual and an automated PUSH install
- Query information within lpp_sources, SPOTs and clients
- Maintain lpp_sources and SPOTs for clients at multiple levels
- Perform ongoing installation updates for lpp_sources, SPOTs and clients
Prerequisites:
You should complete:
- AIX Basics (AU131) or (AU130) or (Q1313)
- AIX System Administration I: Implementation (AU140) or (Q1314)
- AIX System Administration II: Problem Determination (AU160) or (Q1316)
or have equivalent experience
The following course is optional (but helpful):
- AIX 5L TCP/IP I: Configuration (AU070) or AIX 5L: Configuring TCP/IP (Q1307)
You should:
- Have working knowledge of AIX installation and maintenance in a non-NIM environment
- Have working knowledge and understanding of network configuration and administration
- Have working knowledge of the AIX environment and commands
- Be able to work with System Management Interface Tool (SMIT) in configuring a system
- Be able to edit files with vi
- Understand AIX files, file systems, and directories
